If God is good, then why does he permit such bad things to happen?
I don’t think most of the arguments against God and against the Christian faith are very good.
But, there is one argument against God that I think is pretty good, and it is definitely the one I’d use if I were an atheist and wanted to pull people away from faith.
I’m talking about what C.S. Lewis famously called “the problem of pain:”
If God is good, then why does he permit such bad things to happen?
The technical term for this is theodicy, but you don’t need to know the term to know the feeling: even a small child wants to know, “Why?”
The Christian answer is very specific: it’s involves what happened in a 24 hour period in April, AD 30.
