One Year From Now

Jesus told stories, quite a few! As we start 2023 this Sunday we are in Luke 13:6-9 where Jesus tells a story about a fig tree that had not produced figs for three years and the owner wants to cut it down. The gardener intercedes, however, and promises to care for the tree for another year and see what happens. In 2023, the story asks us this -
will this be the year where something you have wanted finally happens?

Extra Mile: Luke 13:6-9 balances patience and accountability. Being made in the image of God we are expected to ‘produce’ and over time if we fail to produce consistently God will prune us - ouch! In the Bible, however, God is always far more merciful than judging. Consider this verse, Exodus 34:6 “The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness, maintaining love to thousands, and forgiving wickedness.
