Why should Christians be financially generous?
Christian generosity is rooted in an understanding that all we are and have belongs to God, the Creator (Psalm 24:1). God is the owner and we are managers. God has made it clear that faithful managers should be generous.
Christians are also grateful for God’s grace and forgiveness expressed through Christ’s death (I Corinthians 6:20). Our gratitude is expressed through obedience to God’s design for living, which prescribes a generous heart. We are created in God’s image, and God is loving and giving.
Why did Jesus link our spiritual lives so closely to financial matters?
Our commitment to generosity is an important step on our journey of knowing, loving and serving God. Giving is an opportunity to worship and serve God. When we return a portion of our financial blessings to God, we create an opportunity for God to work through us and through our church.
How should I give?
The Bible says our generosity should be:
- Regular – I Corinthians 16:2
- Proportional – II Corinthians 8:12
- Sacrificial – Mark 12:41-44
How much should I give?
The New Testament teaches giving in proportion to the material blessings we have received. Jesus affirmed the Old Testament tradition of tithing – giving 10% of our income or blessings. He praised the sacrificial generosity of the poor widow (Luke 21:1-4). We encourage giving a percentage of your income and moving toward, or beyond, the tithe as your goal as you grow in your generosity. You can use the chart below to help you determine how much you commit to give.
Why should I pledge and not just continue to give on Sunday?
First, the process of prayerfully asking God to guide your decision and then making a commitment is an expression of gratitude and praise to God. Secondly, your commitment allows our church to budget and plan for our ministries in the coming year.
What if my situation changes and I need to change my commitment?
