Volunteer HOT List: Immediate and Critical Ways to Serve

Spread your love of learning
Adopt-A-School is an outreach to promote literacy in selected DISD elementary schools through reading to classrooms and distributing new books. Volunteer readers are needed to share their joy of reading with elementary classes on Tuesday mornings from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.  Interested volunteers please call Bunny Tibbals @ 214-522-0049 or email dbtibbals@sbcglobal.net.

Lights, camera, action!
Do you have a heart for theater and for people with special needs?  JESTERS may be what you are looking for!  HPUMC has developed a performing theater group which stars teens and adults.  We welcome volunteers to serve in many capacities.  Help an actor learn the lines or practice a dance number.  Assist with registration.  Operate a camera. Host a special event leading up to the big performance.  Click here to find out all the ways to serve and support JESTERS during its next season (Sept - Feb) -  http://www.hpumc.org/pages/09_jesters .

Wesley-Rankin Community Center needs tutors
Wesley-Rankin, located in West Dallas, is looking for loving and compassionate adults and teens to tutor and mentor in their after-school program. No experience necessary, just an open heart and a willingness to embrace these students and help them achieve the education they need to succeed in life. Sometimes that little bit of encouragement can change a life. Tutors are needed from 3:30-6:30pm Mondays-Thursdays at Wesley-Rankin's Sarah Wilke Youth Center. If you're interested, please contact Nathaniel O'Dell at nathaniel@wesleyrankin.org or 214-742-5739.

Be an encouraging spirit to our many guests and members
Welcoming Ministries needs smiling faces to welcome guests and members each Sunday morning! Your commitment is one hour, one Sunday a month. Members of the Welcoming Ministry team assist folks in the north parking lot, answer questions at one of our welcome centers, escort newcomers to worship or a Sunday morning class, and help parents of infants and toddlers enter the nursery area on the 1st floor.  Contact Kay Porter if you'd like to serve on the team, porterk@hpumc.org

Offering a hand up not a hand out
HPUMC Microfinance committee is looking to grow its team and its locations.  By partnering with local non-government organizations in The Philippines HPUMC has provided 150 families with loans to start businesses such as pig farms, produce stands and beauty supply companies.  This ministry empowers others by teaching “how to fish.”  If you would like to be considered as committee member please email Lisa Stewart.  For details on the Microfinance commitee's recent work click here

Drive seniors to worship
HPUMC provides van service to C.C. Young, the Methodist retirement home near White Rock Lake. This is a vital service for our C.C. Young friends, one they count on every week.  Van drivers are needed for only one hour every fourth Sunday. The requirements are a good driving record, responsible and punctual, and a standard driver’s license. Please consider donating your time to this ministry.  Our senior church members will be grateful! Contact Geoffrey Groth at 214.415.3133.

Be a Cornerstone barista
Serve with a fun team at the Cornerstone Cafe on Sunday mornings.  Volunteers should be comfortable working with people and enjoy interacting with the congregation.  No coffee shop or sales experience is necessary. Shifts are broken up into 7:30am to 9:00am, 9:00am to 10:30am, 10:30am to 12:00pm.  Contact Mary Ann Hoover at hooverm@hpumc.org .

Work one on one with our neighbors in need
Volunteers are needed at Crossroads Community Services to help sort and hang clothing donations, as well as, help clients shop for clothes. Monday-Thursday 8:15am-noon. Days and hours flexible. Contact Jean Jacobs at 214.560.2511 x403 or jjacobs@fumcdallas.org

Support prisoners with words of encouragement
Volunteers are needed to write men and women who are incarcerated.  This involves occasional letters of encouragement.  Your privacy is insured by directing your letters through the Pastoral Care department at HPUMC.  Contact Rev. Barbara Marcum at 214.523.2248 or marcumb@hpumc.org if you are interested in supporting persons who seek Christian support.

Have the gift of hospitality?
Making people feel welcome to HPUMC is one of the most important ministries in the church. It's that critical first impression visitors receive when they walk in our doors, and it sets the atmosphere for the rest of their experience. Consider becoming a vital part of this mission by volunteering to greet and usher in one of the Cornerstone worship services. If you can smile, you can do it!  Contact Mary Ann at hooverm@hpumc.org to volunteer this Sunday!

Drive a golf cart at church
The church has two 8 passenger golf carts circulating the church lots on Sunday mornings assisting those with special needs to and from their cars.  Volunteer cart drivers are needed for two hour shifts on Sunday mornings.   If you would like to serve in this way, please contact Connect & Serve at 214.523.2246 or luederl@hpumc.org.

For a full list of volunteer opportunities go to the Connect & Serve page and click on "In HPUMC", "In Community" or "In the World".  Questions regarding service opportunities, contact Lauri Lueder at luederl@hpumc.org or 214.523.2246.
